East London native Sarah Lindsay moved to Auckland in 2018, after spending 10 years in the London boutique fitness scene she opened her Ponsonby studio SALA.

Since opening its doors, SALA has changed the landscape of fitness in Auckland with its holistic approach to movement. Founder, Sarah Lindsay’s vision for a creative community, rather than a traditional gym is seen through her multidisciplinary movement studio which offers a variety of intimate classes that nurture a mind-body connection.

Sarah believes all movement is meditation, when set with the intention of fully turning up, rather than switching off. She wanted a space where people could enjoy diversity and variety, in a small intimate setting, with a friendly atmosphere. A place where they could really be a part of a like-minded community. She’s stopped referring to SALA as a gym, if anything it’s an anti-gym. She calls it a creative community.

Beyond teaching yoga, managing the studio and being Mum to baby O, Sarah is passionate about cultivating connections through genuine community. You’ll often see her collaborating with fellow, independently owned female owned brands, Sarah is a fierce voice for representation in the small business space.

Q&A

  • When I arrived in Auckland, I really couldn’t find my fitness home. A place that truly encompassed balance. The purpose of Sala’s multidisciplinary offering was to help people move in Rhythm with their changing lives, rather than get caught in habitual movement patterns. I wanted them to have the opportunity to choose what movement suited them based on workload, month cycle and environmental changes. In this way working out isn’t a chore or habit, it’s a response to how you can support the totality of your life.

  • Mindset is the backbone to everything we do. It’s the lens you see through which frames everything. I have a holistic mindset to everything I do- whether it’s when I choose to open my emails (i.e. not right before bed), when I’m choosing what kind of movement my body really needs that day or whether I'm pouring myself into motherhood. When you have a holistically focused mindset, you can become an active participant in your entire life. This helps you to respond to conversations, experiences and decisions rather than react.

  • I think it’s about infinite potential. Recognising we’re never at the goal post but instead before us is unlimited opportunities to live a fulfilling and purposeful life. This way, even ‘failure’ is an opportunity for growth and recalibration.

  • Having a baby means your routine is entirely wrapped around someone else’s routine. I don’t get to have a wildly spacious routine these days but I find keystones of joy throughout my morning. When I’m feeding baby o, josh will make me coffee just the way I like it (black with all good oat milk), I'll walk him to work so we have time before the stress of the day has unfolded to just chat about how we feel. I religiously take be pure vitamins, I might not get time to lather my face but I try and maintain a healthy inner landscape.

  • Do not worry about anyone else. I don’t even follow the Instagram accounts of other studios. Knowing their offerings and successes will not change yours in any way. Focus on your own offering, let it come from a place of authenticity and passion not fear or comparison.

  • Pour yourself into whatever you’re doing in that moment. If I’m home with baby o being mother, I don’t use my phone or think about work. I’m totally with her, we’re on all fours playing. Worrying about work won’t help me solve that issue but it will rob me of the joy of being present with my daughter. The same, if I’m working, particularly the days I’m doing long hours I do not pine for my baby. I trust she is being taken care of and that having a happy, fulfilled mother is one of the best experiences I can expose her to.

  • Ask for help. Lean into your strengths but be intimately aware of your weaknesses, and ask for help to fill in those gaps.

  • Being an active participant. I want to be at the wheel of my own journey every step of the way.

  • There’s only so much planning you can do, at some point you just have to open up your arms and surrender as you jump in. Taking control, in itself, takes a huge amount of surrendering, I’ve finally realised.

  • Absolutely! Say out loud, here’s what I want for myself. Tell people how they can help and support, and with that in mind also support and help others. I often think if I want to live in a city filled with interesting, independently owned businesses then I need to support them. If you want to be supported, show support.
